Al served in the Coast Guard during WWII from September 1942 until March 1946 serving on both the USS Ogden and USS Mintaka. He was stationed in the South Pacific for a portion of his tour of duty. In 1943 on shore leave in New York City he met his wife, Dotty on a blind date. He returned to his ship and active duty, was honorably discharged, and went back to Oregon only to return to New York approximately 3 years later to continue their relationship.
