TRUTH? FACT? OPINION? PROPAGANDA? HOW WOULD YOU KNOW?

“When we confuse immutable truths for disputable facts, we risk being misled and manipulated because opinion and agenda quickly turn data into propaganda.” J Loren Norris

In recent decades the idea has become even more prevalent that TRUTH is subjective and determined by each individual. The challenge this presents should be clear, but please, the level of common sense in the world today is diminishing not expanding. I for one, am a firm believer in absolute truth. I know I am as rare as a green bunny with horns. But I have never seen any amount of data, facts, statistics or opinion which will alter the direction from which the sun rises.

The amount of information and data and tracking and figures and statistics available in this digital age is truly mind numbing. It is altogether possible to be drowned in the weeds of “data driven scientific facts” which are not even remotely germane to the argument at hand nor relevant for critical decision making. Sources abound in every realm to “prove the data” to back any theory. This reality means, if you have a desired outcome, a specific decision you wish to influence, an agenda to promote, then FINDING DATA TO PROVE YOUR POINT IS SIMPLE!

Data, facts, truth, opinion agenda and propaganda are all tools of leaders, communicators, politicians, tyrants, abusers, mentors and manipulators. DO YOU SEE THE DANGER YET?

If we as leaders are not acutely aware of outside agendas and critically decisive regarding our sources, even the VERY BEST will be deceived. That’s why LEADERS ARE READERS - do your own homework. Research the best ideas - even the ones you disagree with regularly. Test and retest your logic. Then lead with the best information you can gather. ALWAYS look for the ABSOLUTE truths surrounding the issue at hand BE PREPARED to apologize when you’re wrong because you were misled or ill advised.

”It’s not just what you learn, but who you learn it from.” John C. Maxwell
