WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH MY LIFE? THE FIRST QUESTION OF LEADERSHIP

What should I do with my life? The first question of leadership.

“I believe this question is likely as old as human consciousness. It drives us to ponder the very purpose, passion and plan for our lives. If we do not consider these things, we are little different than the plants of the field, the animals of the forest, birds of the air and fish of the sea. Our very ability to ponder our purpose sets us apart as a species.” J Loren Norris

There are three questions which I believe support this FIRST question. The more diligently you answer these other three questions, the more clear the answer becomes to the first question.

WHAT AM I GIFTED AT DOING?
If I look across the spectrum of things I am capable of, which ones really stand out? What have been awarded for, won trophies for, received accolades or scholarships for? These responses from what those around you have observed in you are strong indicators of your giftedness. Neuroscientist Dr. Caroline Leaf says, “If you do can something which causes others to look at you with awe and wonder how you did it, and you think to yourself, ‘That was simple, I thought everyone could do that.’ That is your gift!” Now master that gift. Become more than naturally gifted in it. Become the BEST IN THE WORLD at that gift.

WHAT DO I LOVE DOING?
Not everyone, but almost everyone actually finds both joy and fulfillment in performing the function of their gift. Perhaps because it comes with great levels of attention and amazement. Perhaps because it comes so easily and naturally. Perhaps because they possess a natural bent to do this thing, its like second nature and super simple. If you LOVE TO DO SOMETHING and others like to watch you do it OR would want to have for themselves the results of your having done it, such as a one of a kind piece of art or a souvenir, you should pay close attention to that.

WOULD PEOPLE PAY ME TO DO THAT?
If you find, people are willing to pay you to do what you do, or pay to WATCH YOU do what you do or pay you for the final results of WHAT YOU PRODUCE when you do what you do, then you are well on your way to an entrepreneurial career. To become a true professional, make sure you have mastered the craft, offer as much value as you possibly can, offer your services at a fair but competitive price and over deliver on the expectations of the paying audience.

The fastest way to accomplish all three of these is to find someone who is successfully doing what you are gifted at, love to do and can make money at and then follow in their footsteps. Perhaps you can ask them to mentor you. You may have to invest financially in such mentorship or coaching but it’s worth it if they can save you all the time and heartache they experienced on the way to success. In days past we called it apprenticeship, but few people do it the same way today.
