John Lennon

John Lennon, full name John Winston Ono Lennon, was the founder or cofounder of the British rock band the Beatles. He was also an author, a graphic artist, a solo recording artist, and a collaborator with Yoko Ono on recordings and other artistic endeavors. Lennon was born in Liverpool, England, on October 9, 1940, and passed away in New York, New York, on December 8, 1980.

The jovial, working-class parents of John Lennon chose not to raise their quick, sensitive, and talented son after their hasty, late marriage. By the time he was five, he had been traumatizingly cut off from each of them. Lennon was then raised solely by his maternal aunt, Mimi Smith, whose husband also passed away during Lennon’s adolescence, along with his biological mother, who had taught him to play the banjo. Such events were not unusual in the years following World War II, but they gave rise to fury in Lennon, which he sublimated with brilliance, struggle, and a strong need for human connection. At age 21, he wed the devoted, conventional Cynthia Powell, whom he later divorced. At the age of 28, he wed the independent, outspoken Yoko Ono. Further, at the age of 16, he formed. The Beatles, the most significant musical group of the second half of the 20th century, began as a skiffle band.
