Fact Check: Was the Afghanistan Withdrawal a “Success”?

Just one year after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, a move the Biden administration touted then as an “extraordinary success”, the country and the region have descended into chaos as the Taliban and other terrorist groups secure a foothold in Kabul and beyond. The botched mission resulted in the deaths of over a dozen U.S. service members. America’s geostrategic reach was greatly curbed with the forfeiting of Bagram Air Base, seemingly used to keep tabs on adversaries like China, Iran and Russia.

With the Taliban at the wheel, numerous elements of Afghan society have reverted to their pre-9/11. Women, young girls, and minorities have lost many of their rights they grew accustomed to over the last 20 years.

The recent assassination of Ayman al-Zawahiri, leader of al Qaeda, in Kabul this month shows that the region is once again becoming a safe haven for dangerous terrorist groups.

The Biden administration saw “success,” while the rest of the world has had to live with the consequences of their actions.
