Spiritual Passages: A New (Old) Paradigm of Aging

In Western countries the human life-span has dramatically increased over the last century. What is the import of these extra years for the individual and the culture?
Our usual paradigms of "successful aging" tell us little. They speak mainly of an extension of midlife vigor and activities. Sacred traditions, Eastern and Western, provide an alternate vision: that later life is an optimal time to turn away from egotistic concerns, and tend to the growth of the soul. Moreover, the wise elders who undergo this process are traditionally seen as a crucial resource for the larger society. How different from our fear that a growing elder cohort is a dangerous drain on social resources.

Drawing upon my book, Spiritual Passages, I will explore the aging process as an advanced "curriculum for the soul." Using teachings ranging Hindu to Native American, to Judeo-Christian, we will discuss how to work creatively with the losses and graces of life's second half.
