A video documented performance by my late friend and musical comrade 'Dominic' at 'The Wide Open Cabaret', a performance cafe created in the abandoned remains of the 'Cinerama'; A cinemascope theatre that was near the square on Hereford St in Christchurch. This was about 1991 or 1992. Dominic exploded into the Christchurch music scene with his unique concert level classical guitar and unlimited genre morphings of latin, blues and jazz after returning from GIT (Guitar Institute of Technology) in LA and his years of study after winning a scholarship. As well as bringing his consummate skills to the streets he also played at the 'Gentlemen's Club' and various other venues and private soirees. We played a lot of music together and during the first section he actually plays a piece of music I was developing for recorder that we would create baroque improvisations to, using a simple minor to diminshed progression in E minor. One aspect of Dominic that people would not of known was his extensive written compositions, his room floor was covered in his writing which included a concerto for guitar scored for guitar and small orchestra and numerous other incredible pieces of music, some of it so virtuosic that I doubt anyone but he and a handful of people in the world could even begin to play it and resembling in its advanced technicality, his favourite composer Mangore, he was actually a prolific composer and even when he played electric used exactly the same technique as his flamenco guitaring utilising each fingernail on his right hand as a plectrum. I do not know what happened to his manuscripts. He is still missed by many to this day and died in the mid to late 90s. Now he jams with Jimi Hendrix and Barrios Mangore and continues to compose at the Astral Conservatory of Music. Play on brother Dominic.
