IN LEADERSHIP JUST LIKE IN HISTORY, TIMING IS EVERYTHING!

“If those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it, then those who lead without understanding the times they lead in are doomed to the scrap heap of leadership legacies.. You can neither live nor lead in vacuum sealed echo chamber.” J Loren Norris

No one could have planned or predicted the social, cultural, political and economic paradigm shifts of the first two quarters of 2020. The best prognosticators in the universe would have gotten it wrong to some degree. One term that has been thrown around is :unprecedented. In my opinion, that is the most accurate description. What does this mean for leadership? How can you plan to lead WHERE NO ONE HAS BEEN BEFORE? How do you avoid the faux-pas of the past?

LEADERS CANNOT BE CULTURALLY DEAF
AS a father of four and a grandfather of eight, I have learned to distinguish cries of pain, injury or discomfort from the cries of “I want it my way and I want it NOW!” With millions of voices clambering to be heard in the streets, in the voting booths and in social media, you must know, THEY ARE NOT THE SAME! A two year old crying because they fell sounds much like a two year old crying because they need a new diaper. But they sound entirely different than a two year old who wants their toy back because they refuse to share or worse, the cry of a two year who is bullying some one else to GET THEIR TOYS.

Leaders must be able to distinguish the voices of the unheard from the voices of the entitlement tyrants. To do this, leaders need to listen for the purpose of hearing and understanding.

LEADERS CANNOT BE CULTURALLY BLIND
The social and cultural upheaval in the streets of the USA is a blend of people righteously speaking up in the face of decades of mistreatment, injustice and hatred and simultaneously a teeming horde of misguided, uninformed and misled young people. Many of these young people are desperately seeking to belong, to be seen and to be impactful. They have a desire make a difference, make change, make their mark they have less concern about the price or consequences of their behavior. Knowing the difference requires compassion, relationship and awareness.

A catalyst which exacerbates this social transformation is a group of nefarious actors hiding in the wings providing funding, direction and instigation. Their motivation appears to be the complete dismantling of this American experiment of freedom. Their intention is a form of social governance we have been fighting to prevent for more than four generations.

Leaders must be able to see the difference and respond to their actions and reactions accordingly.

LEADERS CANNOT BE CULTURALLY MUTE
Tim Ross recently said, “If I see something, I gonna say something.” This should be the sentiment of every leader in America at every level. I agree, to maintain your silence when you know better is to be an indifferent accomplice. Leaders need to speak up in a timely manner wile also guarding against rash decisions made to appease the mob. Mob mentality is generally driven by emotional reaction rather than rational thought. Rushing to speak out without all the facts could destroy any hope of future correction and create irreversible damage to your influence, your leadership or even your brand.

Leaders must speak out, lend their voice, wield their influence and do so with balanced diligence and compassion.

LISTEN. LOOK. SPEAK. Respond with wisdom and compassion. That is the timely leadership our world needs today.
