COGNITIVE DISSONANCE - STORYPOWER - MIND CONTROL & LEADERSHIP

"Cognitive dissonance is a noticeable imbalance between what you observe and what you already believe to be true. The ability to separate reality from belief is hard for most people. The ability to manipulate how others think with this tool is a common practice. Understanding and properly applying ethical communication practices is a leadership responsibility." J Loren Norris

COGNITIVE DISSONANCE
Much has been said in recent months about confirmation bias, cognitive dissonance and other seemingly heady or intellectual terms. The use of these terms is all on its own a certain form of communication manipulation. Many people who use these terms in media, know for certain how few people truly understand the terms. This is on the one hand pedantic and at the same time a huge mire of quick sand intellectually.

If I am fairly confident that you have never heard a specific word properly used, I have the ability and opportunity to use the word out of context, to mean something entirely different from the original meaning and to imply to your subconscious that I am much smarter than you and should therefore be trusted. If I tell you what the meaning is and intentionally mislead you, it may be a long time before you know the truth and by then, you're more likely to believe the FIRST meaning you heard not the subsequent meanings, even if the later meanings are the truth.

Most people hold more firmly to lies they believe already than to the truth later revealed.

STORYPOWER
All humans carry subconscious ideas and ideologies. Most humans have reached a comfort level with those ideas which allows them to hold onto them even when they are inaccurate, unproductive or destructive. Leaders, coaches and communicators trained in StoryPower understand how people communicate their beliefs through stories. They are also very well rehearsed in listening skills, reframing skills and communication skills in order to hear, reposition and reveal long held damaging or deceptive beliefs through heightened awareness.

Through a story, subconscious beliefs expose themselves and a good coach brings them to light.

MIND CONTROL & LEADERSHIP
John Maxwell says, "Leadership is influence, nothing more and nothing less." I believe this to be a foundational truth. Leading people is not about controlling them, demanding of them or even managing them. Leading people is about influencing the way they think, the way they behave, the way they perform and the way they perceive the world. Leading people is a skill to be learned, but not a task for the weak at heart. Successfully influencing others is an enormous responsibility. The missteps can lead to failed business and failed relationships. The pressure of accountability to self and others can take a significant toll on a leader's emotions. Trying to lead a team of positive, happy, productive people from a position of stress, anxiety and self doubt is the definition of cognitive dissonance.

Leaders benefit greatly from learning to understand, reveal and raise awareness of beliefs which run counter to the success of the team or organization.
