Phoenix, Arizona – On December 28, 2020, just after 8:45 p.m., 30-year-old Jordan Crawford was shot by Phoenix police officers after they said he "simulated a handgun" near 27th and Orangewood avenues.

Two officers were initially called to the scene at about 8:45 p.m. when a woman reported her ex-boyfriend was on the patio of her apartment and refusing to leave. She also said "he had been violent in the past with her and was now causing problems for her.” "He's out there causing me a lot of problems and I don't want to be kicked out of my apartment," the woman can be heard saying in a 911 call.

Crawford was not immediately visible to officers when they arrived at the apartment complex. Minutes later, however, they saw him walk through the complex and called out to him but he did not stop. Crawford told officers he had a gun and placed his right hand behind his rear waistband area. Bodycam footage from one of the officer's showed Crawford from a distance, making it difficult to hear and see Crawford at times. The officer appeared to follow Crawford around the complex, calling out to him and then asking him what was behind his back.

"It's a gun, do you want to see?" Crawford yells back.
The officer continued to follow and talk to Crawford through the complex. He asked Crawford to show his hands, but he refused and continued to walk backward with his right hand behind his back.

"Jordan, don't do this," the officer yells. "Jordan, show us your hands right now, brother." Crawford around the same time said, "Who wants to kill someone tonight?"

"Jordan, we don't want to kill you, dude," the officer yells back. Crawford eventually entered traffic and crossed 27th Avenue away from the complex and stopped on a sidewalk.

"Who's gonna kill someone tonight, you decide," he yells at police. He then begins counting down from five before quickly pulling his right hand from behind his back. Police say he "simulated a handgun," which prompted five officers on scene to shoot at Crawford, according to Fortune. About 14 gunshots could be heard on video from the officers' bodycams; however, it's unclear how many of those struck Crawford. In one of the bodycam videos, Crawford could be seen lying on the ground with blood near his body. He at one point gasped loudly for air.

"I don't see any gun, I don't have anything yet," one of the officers can be heard saying in the video. A weapon was not recovered during an investigation. Crawford was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

No other injuries were reported.
