The first setting for the De'Aaron Fox origin story is where countless other basketball path-to-glory narratives began: the high school gym. Early in the morning. Long, lonely hours spent from a young age, with the ball bouncing and the sneakers squeaking. Fox would show up at 6 a.m. His high school coach, Emmanuel Olatunbosun, would open the doors for him while the cross-country team stretched for its morning run.
Just a high school teenager then, he was seen as Kentucky’s next John Wall by many. The man himself saw it. Fox, Wall said, reminded him of himself. He thought Fox would go on to make a bigger impact in the NBA than Markelle Fultz or Lonzo Ball, the two-point guards expected to go first and second overall in NBA’s 2017 draft.
Fox was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is the son of Aaron Fox and Lorraine Harris-Fox. Fox has one brother, Quentin. His mom, too, played basketball at Arkansas-Little Rock when she was young. He has taken inspiration from his mom and still looks forward to her.
Fox was the nation's second-best point guard behind Lonzo Ball. He was rated as a five-star ranked and ranked the consensus No. 6 overall recruit in the Class of 2016 by the four main recruiting services: Rivals, ESPN, and 247Sports. He committed to Kentucky in late 2015.
