Indicted Mesa County Clerk and Recorder Tina Peters turned herself in to authorities on Thursday night after a warrant was issued for her arrest earlier that day.
Peters, the Republican clerk and election denier who is facing charges in a criminal case related to election equipment tampering, allegedly violated her bail bond conditions and a protection order after contacting the director of elections in the Mesa County Clerk and Recorder’s Office. She is prohibited from contacting any employees in that office, was barred from overseeing the 2021 and 2022 Mesa County elections and is on leave.
Peters contacted director Brandi Bantz on Tuesday to inform her and county clerks across the state that she intended to conduct a recount of her election results after losing the GOP nomination for secretary of state. State elections officials said Peters had no authority to seek a recount herself through county clerks after having lost by a double-digit margin. Peters had previously requested a recount through the Secretary of State’s office, but she did not pay the required cost by the deadline.
This occurred less than a week after Peters narrowly avoided arrest for violating a judge’s travel order. Her attorney took the blame for not relaying the information to her.
According to a booking report from the Pitkins County Sheriff’s Office, Peters turned herself into the county jail in Aspen at 9:17 p.m and was booked out of the jail a little over an hour later. The sheriff’s office said she paid the $1,000 cash-only bond for her release.
In addition to this case, Peters was also arrested in February because authorities said she resisted the execution of a search warrant.
