Ocala, Florida — On Aug. 11, around 8:30 a.m., Officer Elder was called to a residence in Northeast Ocala about a stolen vehicle. The victim advised the officer that they left their blue Mazda unlocked with the keys inside while going into a friend's house. While the victim was inside the house, Dale Shrewsbury, 35, entered the victim's car and stole it. The victim saw the suspect get into the car and drive off and did not know who the suspect was. Shortly after the car was stolen, around 9:20 a.m., Officer Theis and his trainee, Officer Uronu, located the vehicle near the 4900 block of E. Silver Springs Blvd. Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle did not pull over and fled from the officers. The officers proceeded to pursue the fleeing vehicle. K-9 Officer Roos and Officer Elder quickly joined the pursuit.
The pursuit took place on many roadways in the city and the county, including SR 40, Baseline Rd., SE Maricamp Rd., SE 44th Ave. Rd., SE 41st Ct., US 441, and others. OPD called for support from the Marion County Sheriff's Office and MSCO K-9 Deputy Esquivel and his K-9 partner Jet made their way to the area of the pursuit. OPD Detective Young also headed to the area to potentially deploy a tire-deflation device on Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury was driving recklessly to escape capture and ran several cars off the road. He even struck an FWC patrol vehicle in the process. Near the area of SE 73rd St. and SE 36th Ave., Shrewsbury continued down a dirt road into a wooded area. The OPD officers were unable to continue the pursuit through the woods due to the pathway being too narrow for the patrol vehicles. Officers attempted to follow on foot to get a direction of travel but lost sight of Shrewsbury.
Within just a few seconds of our officers losing sight of the car, MSCO K-9 Deputy Esquivel spotted the stolen car and began his pursuit. OPD Detective Young also located the vehicle and provided backup to the MSCO K-9 deputy. Shrewsbury continued to flee from law enforcement and even drove through residential yards and struck several fences. Near the 5300 block of SE 41st Ct., the K-9 deputy conducted a PIT maneuver on the vehicle, to which Shrewsbury then fled from the car. Shrewsbury was quickly apprehended by MSCO K-9 Jet, ending the 21-minute pursuit. Shrewsbury received medical treatment for the K-9 apprehension and was taken to jail. He was arrested for auto theft, aggravated fleeing and eluding, five counts of leaving the scene of a crash involving property damage, and driving with a suspended license—his fourth offense.
