Blue Ice of Lake Huron, Michigan 2021
Michelle and I travel up the coast of Lake Huron to Port Sanilac, MI to see and photograph the rare blue ice. The phenomenon of Blue Ice is common on glaciers, but unusual on the Great Lakes.
Perfect weather conditions can allow water to freeze slowly and evenly, resulting in ice composed of large crystals. When the light travels deeper into slowly formed ice, some of the red wavelengths of sunlight get absorbed into the ice structure, and blue, which is the shortest wavelength of visible light, bounces back out, meets our eyes, and results in a deep aqua color.
