Human pyramid contest marks Krishna Janmashtami festival

Thousands of people gathered in the Mumbai suburb of Thane to celebrate the Krishna Janmashtami festival. Devotees performed dance dramas, sang sacred songs, and participated in Dahi Handi – a ritual where people climb on top of each other and form a human pyramid, trying to reach and break clay pots filled with curds that have been suspended high on buildings. The Maharashtra chief minister earlier announced that Dahi Handi would now be recognized as an official sport in the state.
