Yes, it’s recommended to get a mortgage loan pre-approval before you start your home search because listing agents will want to see this often times before agreeing to schedule a showing. Furthermore, even if you're able to schedule a showing without having a loan pre-approval letter in place, you'll still need to show a pre-approval letter or some sort of proof of funds when submitting an offer.

Keep in mind that having a loan pre-approval letter makes you appear more serious in the eyes of listing agents and even your buyer's agent, so this may help in scheduling when it comes time to try to get a showing in if you're able to demonstrate that you are a serious buyer, you're pre-approved for a mortgage and therefore you've already gone through the steps with your mortgage banker.
