Message Notes 11/28 (Vincent)
Thankful: For The Love Of God
*****
Application Point:
No matter where we are in our life stage or spiritual journey, we will always have the love of god - and that alone is something to give thanks for.

Scripture:
1 John 4:7-11 NIV
The Four Loves: [will build one at a time]
1. storge - familial love; affection
2. philia/phileo - brotherly or sisterly love; a close friendship
3. eros - romantic love; erotic; a passionate bond.
4. agape - unconditional love; desires the good of the object being loved; wants nothing in return

Scripture:
Luke 15:11-24 NIV

Quote:
If I am able to look at the world with the eyes of God’s love and discover that God’s vision is not that of a stereotypical landowner or patriarch but rather that of an all-giving and forgiving father who does not measure out his love to his children according to how well they behave, then I quickly see that my only true response can be deep gratitude.
- Henri Nuowen, The Return of the Prodigal Son

Quote:
For a very long time I considered low self-esteem to be some kind of virtue. But now I realize that the real sin is to deny God’s first love for me, to ignore my original goodness.
- Henri Nuowen, The Return of the Prodigal Son
Application Point:
Let’s not hold back from receiving God’s merciful love for us because we don’t think we deserve it. Of course we don’t! That’s the beauty of it.
Application Point:
There is nothing we can do to earn favors or to rack up more debt in God’s balance book, because it has already been paid in full - past, present, and future - by Jesus’ atoning sacrifice on the cross.

Quote:
For most of my life I have struggled to find God, to know God, to love God. I have tried hard to follow the guidelines of the spiritual life—pray always, work for others, read the Scriptures—and to avoid the many temptations to dissipate myself. I have failed many times but always tried again, even when I was close to despair.
Now I wonder whether I have sufficiently realized that during all this time God has been trying to find me, to know me, and to love me. The question is not “How am I to find God?” but “How am I to let myself be found by him?” The question is not “How am I to know God?” but “How am I to let myself be known by God?” And, finally, the question is not “How am I to love God?” but “How am I to let myself be loved by God?” God is looking into the distance for me, trying to find me, and longing to bring me home.
- Henri Nuowen, The Return of the Prodigal Son
