GRADY COUNTY, Oklahoma — On August 12, 2022, near Bridge Creek, 36-year-old Rachel Zion Clay was taken into custody after law enforcement says she barricaded herself in a patrol vehicle on Friday afternoon after she shot both a deputy and a civilian with an AR-15 patterned short barreled rifle.

The Grady County Sheriff's Office received a call Friday morning about a suspicious individual near a home in the area of County Rd. 1260 and County St. 2960, just northwest of Blanchard and south of Bridge Creek. Clay was placed in protective custody earlier on Friday, but she escaped her handcuffs, acquired a rifle from inside the vehicle and started firing.

Both the deputy and civilian were transported to a nearby hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Trooper Eric Foster with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol says that Clay was taken back into custody shortly before 5 p.m. She is being held at the Grady County Jail.
