Baboons are monkeys with a bare, elongated snout that reminds of a dog. They live in very organized flocks and move mainly on the ground. As they often sit on their hindquarters, they develop buttock calluses. Several Egyptian deities, such as Thoth, god of knowledge, writing and language, were represented with a baboon’s head. There are 5 species of baboons: the Guinea baboon (the smallest), the olive baboon (the largest and most widespread, also known as the Noguera baboon), the chacma (south of the African continent, pictured), the yellow baboon (also known as the cynocephalal baboon), and the hamadryas (with abundant grey mane).
