On July 5, 2022, at around 9:55 a.m., Harbor Patrol Division officers received a call for service of an “Assault with a Deadly Weapon shots fired,” in the 600 block of W. Anaheim Street. The suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Reginald Humphrey, left the location of the initial call for service prior to the officers’ arrival. Responding officers were in the nearby area of Opp Street and Ronan Avenue when they observed the suspect walking on the sidewalk. Bodycam video shows the officers giving the suspect verbal commands but Humphrey refused to comply. The officers followed Humphrey and observed he was armed with a handgun. Humphrey pointed the handgun at the officers and in response, the officers fired their duty weapons. After the shooting Humphrey continued to hold the handgun and refused to follow the officers’ commands. Responding officers deployed a beanbag shotgun and struck Humphrey at which point Humphrey dropped the handgun. Humphrey was struck by the officers’ gunfire and was taken into custody without further incident. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased. No officers were injured during this incident. Humphrey’s handgun was recovered at scene and was booked as evidence.
