John isn't addressing unbelievers with this statement, although it rightly fits them. He speaks to those who claim Christianity yet believe they are no longer sinful because they are saved. Every person is guilty of sin. Claiming not to sin is the ultimate form of self-deception. In contrast, true believers recognize their sinful nature and admit it to themselves and God. Jesus cleanses us of our sins with the caveat that we admit to them. Walking in God's light constantly reveals how sinful we indeed are. The only sinless person was Jesus. Therefore, it is not sinlessness that God expects from us but truthful ownership and confessing of our sins. This is an ongoing process throughout life. Confession is not a once and done now I'm saved situation.
