Conserving Marine Fishery: Summer fishing moratorium ends in South China Sea

The summer fishing moratorium has ended in the South China Sea, with swarms of fishing boats sailing off from the south China coast on Tuesday. China has imposed the annual fishing ban in the South China Sea since 1999 to promote sustainable marine fishery development and improve marine ecology.

The first of thousands of fishing vessels sail towards the South China Sea – free once again to ply their trade, with the end of summer's annual three-and-a-half month moratorium.

The yearly break allows for fish breeding and safety inspections of fishing gear and vessels.

While fishermen may lose a little income over the summer, many say they more than make up for it in the fall.
