Steve Deace - C.S Lewis An Atheist Befriended a Devout Catholic Man J.R.R. Tolkien & Was Converted

July 15, 2022 at the Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center The Family Leader Christian Organization held their annual summit in Des Moines, Iowa. Tickets ranged in price from $39 each for students and military to $75. All 1800 seats sold out. Speakers included were Tucker Carlson, Steve Deace, Bob Vander Plaats, Greg Baker, Dr. Tony Evans, Chuck Hurley, Monte Knudson, Dr. Bill Lile, Barry Meguiar, Tommy Walker, Kim Reynolds, and Chuck Grassley.

Steve Deace talked of his latest project and the history of C.S. Lewis & J.R.R. Tolkien:

“Almost a century ago...I mentioned the name C.S. Lewis. He was an atheist college professor and he befriended a devout Catholic man named J.R.R. Tolkien. And they used to have debates at the pub on the campus over a pint or a few with Tolkien trying to convince him that God does exist and that you are a sinner and you have to recognize that. Tolkien eventually won the argument. And out of that argument came arguably one of the greatest Christian thinkers of the 20th century. And out of that friendship came a recognition. Western civilization doesn't have the good stories anymore, and if stories don't work how come when God incarnate came to us Emanuel, he spent a good time telling stories we call parables. You bet stories work. Stories penetrate bone and marrow. They prick the conscience. They get right to the heart of the matter. And out of this partnership and friendship came a couple of book series you might be familiar with...Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the Rings....Straight up biblical allegories....A ring of power...."
