It is an ancient temple from the Ayutthaya period. During the early Rattanakosin period under the reign of King Rama I, the king's younger brothe, Prince Maha Sura Singhanat renovated the entire monastery as merit making dedicated to his father. It was renamed Wat Pathum Khongkha (temple of lotuses in water). It was formerly named Wat Sampheng because of its location in Sampheng, the Chinese and commercial quarters in those days.

The temple was well worth a visit the history is very interesting as well as the location in one if the oldest parts of Bangkok. It was a great second stop on the tour of Bangkok by boat.
