Influence is the most powerful tool of leadership. In fact, one cannot lead without the ability to influence. One can manage, manipulate or even demand certain behavior and outcomes, but that is not good leadership.

However, just because people pay attention to you, watch you as you buy your way to fame or make a fool of yourself for pure attention’s sake, you may gain the appearance of influence, the affects of influence and the reputation of ‘influencer’ but that does not equate to quality leadership.

As followers, we all must endeavor to discern the motives and intent of influencers before trusting them to lead us. Are they amassing ‘likes’ and ‘followers’ for the fame and fortune it produces? Are they people who will add value, insight, empowerment and encouragement to our lives? Do they truly care about the people that follow them?

As leaders, we must constantly evaluate our own motives and intentions to ensure we are leading from a good place. If you need people to like you and validate you as a leader, you have insecurity issues you need to address before leading. If you lose all your courage and leadership moxie the first time someone is critical of your style or content, you may have a position of leadership and yet more room to grow your leadership skills.
