Ask anyone today how they feel about the NSA spying on them 24/7 or recording all their phone calls, texts, emails, and online activity and you might get the response “So what, I have nothing to hide. I don’t mind the NSA spying on me, I’m not doing anything illegal. Besides with all the terrorism and crime these days we need the government to be able to have as much information as possible to catch the bad guys…”.

The thing is, you might THINK you don’t have anything to hide right now, but what if the rules of the game were all of a sudden changed…? On top of that, we ALL do things from time to time that we would rather no one saw or knew about. After all we ARE ONLY HUMAN and we do make mistakes, missteps, and even do bad things from time to time. Even if we don’t do really bad things, we still do things sometimes that could be considered bad like slipping out a curse word or an insult when we did not mean for it to be heard out loud. Some of us might even run a red light from time to time accidentally or on purpose.

The thing is this line of thinking simply engenders within us that we are all “guilty until proven innocent” when our constitutional rights guarantee just the opposite, that we are “innocent until proven guilty”.
Think about this for a moment, do you really think you are better behaved when you know everyone is watching? Maybe you are at first, but what happens once we grow familiar with the constant 24/7 monitoring and stealth surveillance? Are you ALWAYS going to be on your best behavior, even on camera or on a hot mic? The short and quick answer to that is no way.
