I Think I'm Going to Kathmandu! That's Really What I Want to Do!

In the fall of 1974, I headed off to college at Michigan Technological University. If you grew up in Michigan in the 70's, Rock and Roll was your life - or at least a very big part of it. MTU is not a big enough venue to attrack big bands but Northern Michigan, just 100 miles southeast of MTU, is. So my buddies and I hit the road to see Bachman Turner Overdrive who were touring with a little-known Detroit (actually Ann Arbor) band called Bob Seger. I had no idea what I was in for. Seger has since become huge but then he was just a warm up band. BTO had to have regretted touring with Seger - they had the hits but Seger blew them away. The article shown in the video describes exactly what we saw. Seger came back for multiple encores demanded by the audience. BTO put on a good show - You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet had just hit the charts and they had several other hits to fall back on. But Seger was amazing and shortly after this concert, he released his Beautiful Loser LP and a year later Live Bullet sealed his fame. But Seger is no overnight sensation. He released his first song in 1961. He had his first hit, Ramblin', Gamblin' Man in 1968. But it was his 1975 song that relates so closely to this video. In 1975 Bob Seger said,

I think I'm goin' to Katmandu,
That's really really where I'm going to
If I ever get out of here
That's what I'm gonna do!

And in 2019, I went to Kathmandu. I can't include his song on this video (copyright you know) but I will give you a link below. I have it on my phone as part of my Faves Playlist and I shared it with our guide and AirBNB host. They had never heard it but loved it. Building bridges baby. But I didn't go alone.

My daughter, Paula, joined Janie and I on our sojourn to Kuh Kuh Kuh Katmandu...
