Automatic Transmission Repair - While Camped Out!

With our automatic transmission not shifting into 1st or 4th gear, we had a tough decision to make. We're on an extended road trip and are a long ways from home and having this kind of car trouble is disastrous, but how do we go about getting it fixed? Do we just take it in, pay the money and wait? We live in our trailer right now, so where do we stay? How do we get around? This looks very expensive! After doing some research and testing we decided to try and fix it ourselves, right here in our campsite...
