Grand Rapids, Michigan – In the early afternoon of May 3, 2017, Grand Rapids Police encountered Malik Emmanuel Carey, 18, in a parked car on Dickinson Street east of Calvin Avenue SE. As officers talked with Carey he pulled out a .38 caliber handgun and fired four rounds.

The shots were fired before Grand Rapids police had a chance to draw their weapons. As police retreated, an officer was able to deploy a taser, which struck Carey.

Carey bolted from the car with the handgun and ran from the vehicle. One more shot was fired at police. Officers returned fire; one bullet struck Carey in the head and another round struck him in the arm.

Carey collapsed in the front yard of a home on Dickinson and was pronounced dead a short time later at a Grand Rapids hospital.

At the time of his death, Carey was listed as a probation absconder stemming from a 2015 conviction for assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder. He was placed on probation for five years, but went AWOL on April 7.

It stemmed from a shooting in August, 2015 on Innwood Drive SE in which shots were fired at several people in a car. Carey, then 16, was charged with assault with intent to murder, a potential life offense. He pleaded guilty to a reduced charge and was sentenced in Oct. 2015 to a year in jail followed by probation.

Carey had trouble following conditions of probation after his release from jail. Offenses include testing positive for marijuana and opioids in Oct. 2016 and failing to charge his electronic tether.

Carey has a criminal history dating back to 2010 when he was 12 years old. Offenses include second-degree home invasion, aggravated assault, breaking and entering and resisting and opposing police.
