Flathead Catfish Fishing The Grand River Michigan // Night Fishing // Flathead Catfish Lure

For many years I was primarily a bass fisherman and I grew up fishing the looking glass river during the day never at night.As an adult I learned 2 very important things. The grand river is a powerhouse fishery that holds far more fishy beasts than most people think. The other thing I learned was that night fishing is super productive especially in the heat of summer. Many fish species are more active at night especially Flathead Catfish! The first tie I went night fishing on the grand river was a life changing experience. That night I caught my first pike over 30 inches and my first walleye. Soon after I started night fishing more often. Fast forward 6 years or so and I finally caught my first Flathead Catfish. Honestly I was fishing for salmon with a big #4 chartreuse mepps spinner and was surprised to find I had a Flathead Catfish on the end of my line. The moral of the story is try out some night fishing if you haven't before you might get a surprise like I did. Many people think it is bizarre to catch Catfish on lures. Caffish are often thought of as bottom feeders that eat dead stuff off the bottom of the river. Although this is true in my experience I believe they hunt as much if not more then they scavenge. I have caught loads of Channel Catfish on spinners and jigs and even crank baits day fishing and night fishing. Obviously I have far less experience with Flathead Catfish but I have seen Channel Catfish stalking and chasing prey on a few occasions and know them to be aggressive predators as apposed to lazy scavengers. So if you combine fishing a powerhouse fishery like the Grand River with night fishing with a Mepps spinner you could end up with a flathead on the line. Most people prefer to target Flathead Catfish with live bait. Big live bait like a keeper small or hog rock bass or bluegill. If they go after fish there is no reason they won't hit a lure. If you are looking for a Flathead Catfish lure the spinner just may be the answer.
