Amino acids are molecules that contain an amine and a carboxylic acid. Indeed, they contain an acid (carboxylic acid) and a base (amine). This means that under the correct conditions an amino acid can exist as an anion and cation simultaneously. When an amino acid exists as a cation and anion it is called a Zwitter ion
