Density Experiment Prenursing Chemistry Lab Instructional Video

In this experiment we will determine the density of regular and irregularly shaped objects. After viewing this video you will have a good foundation and understanding in the scientific instruments and procedures necessary to measure density. In any prenursing chemistry lab course you will experiment with density. It is a fundamental physical property. Density is also a good lead into understand specific gravity. Specific gravity is the ratio of the density of a substance and the density. Density is the mass of an object divided by its volume. Mass is obtained by simply placing an object on a scale. Volume can be determined by either direct measurement and applying a mathematical formula or by using a technique called volume by displacement. Volume by displacement is accomplished by first knowing the volume of water in a measuring device such as a graduated cylinder, placing the object into the water and measuring the volume of the object and the water. Taking the difference between the final volume and initial volume will tell you the volume of the object.
