Recrystallization Lab Procedure of Benzoic Acid

The recrystallization lab is common in any organic chemistry lab course. In this video I will show you the technique to purify benzoic acid in hot water. This video will alos take you through the set up and use of a hot filtration. It is a simple yet very powerful technique to purify solids. Once you have selected a proper solvent all you need to do is dissolve your compound in a minimum amount of solvent using heat to make a super saturated solution. Once all material has dissolved simply allow the solution to stand and crystals will form.

The proper solvent for recrystallization is on in which the desired compound is not soluble at low temperatures but is soluble near the boiling point of the solvent. This may take some experimenting to determine.
