Kosi Bay & Kosi Mouth Kwazulu Natal South Africa

Kosi Mouth is at the extreme north eastern point of South Africa, a kilometre or so south of the Mozambique border on the Indian Ocean coast. The Kosi Bay lakes and estuary are a place of incredible natural beauty, where man and nature exist, mostly side by side, as they have for centuries.

We camped at Utshwayelo Kosi Mouth Lodge and Camp, which is as close as you can get to the mouth when it comes to accommodation. You can obtain a permit for access to the beach and river mouth at the reception. A 4x4 is required to get to the river mouth, although a normal car will get you some of the way.

Kosi Bay is renowned for the traditional, woven fish traps and palisade kraals used by the community for well over 700 years – a skill passed down from generation to generation. The palisade fish kraals consist of a guide fence that curves in towards a fish trap, allowing fish easy entry but no escape.
