Augrabies Falls 2022 Flood Low Water vs High Water

Augrabies Falls in flood 2022, I visited the falls twice, around 30 days apart and what a difference a month makes in the life of a waterfall. My first visit was in early January, in mid summer, when water levels were quite low. After heavy rains in the catchment area of Lesotho, the Free State and Gauteng, the Orange River was in flood 30 days later, so I loaded up the bakkie and was off again on the 800 kilometre journey back up north.

Augrabies, which means "Place of great noise" in the San language, is formed when the mighty Orange River, South Africa's longest and largest, is channeled through a narrow chasm formed in the ancient granite over millions of years of water. The sight, especially when in flood is spectacular. It's not Victoria Falls, Iguazu or Niagara to be sure, but it's an awesome experience all the same.

The falls are in a national park and SANParks has provided excellent facilities, a well stocked shop, restaurant, chalets and a pleasant camp site with clean ablutions and lots of green grass & shade. It's well worth a visit, I hope this video helps convince you of that.

I’m Chris, video creator, outdoor lover, conservation minded overlanding & road trip fan. Now exploring Africa overland and sharing our adventures in video, photos and words. Kangela is aimed at those who want to experience overlanding & road tripping adventures, but who don’t care as much about the vehicle that gets them there, as they do about the journey itself and the destination.

I'm currently embarked on a 2 year long mission, Project #60460, to visit 60 of the most unique places in southern and east Africa to mark my 60th year on this, the only planet that we have. I'll be sharing the adventure with videos, community updates and stories. And along the way I will be highlighting the plight of 3 of Africa's big cats: the Lion, Leopard & Cheetah.
