Alaska has been battling extensive wildfires this warm summer, which are said to be caused by lightning, more vegetation and dry conditions. The soil is so dry that fires are going underground where they burn deep, even over the winter burning peat which leaves the area vulnerable to fires being created from the embers in the spring.
