Builder Blends First Nations, Timber Framing, Modern Building Techniques in Unique Ceremony Building

George takes me on a tour of this amazing Indigenous ceremony building that he built over the summer. The idea of the building was to build something that is up to modern code but in a way that still honors the traditional building style of the first nations of this area, as well as being as environmentally friendly as possible. George and his crew used raw logs for the posts and rafters of the structure and they used the stripped bark from them to make shingles for the roof. Hardwood bark was traditionally used by the first nations of the great lakes for some of their buildings, but because there are no hardwoods large enough on Manitoulin island, and because the cedar bark would have otherwise been waste, George decided to adapt the bark into the shingles. This building was made with a lot of intention and attention to detail. There are 13 posts that represent the 13 moon cycles of the year, and the four posts in the center represent the 4 directions and seasons. All the planks used for the siding and ceiling were custom cut along their grain and scribed to fit next to each other. Traditionally the posts would be dug into the ground but because of modern building codes they needed to be on top of solid footing outside of the ground, So boulders were strategically placed and the posts were lifted and placed on the boulders with a metal rod going up the center of the wood post, The posts were also custom cut to fit the contours of the boulders and with these fine attention to details it easy to begin to understand the hard work that was put into this building.
On a personal note, this is one of the more unique buildings I have had the pleasure of filming, and I feel blessed to have had the permission to be able to have the opportunity to have done so.
