As their investigation continues, detectives conducted a search of the Altima used by Jordan Griffin and Devontae Moore on the night of the robbery-in-progress and located items inside the Altima that further link both suspects to the series of armed robberies detectives believe they are responsible for.
On September 24, 2019, detectives presented Moore’s case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration. Moore is being held on $450,000 bail and was charged with the following:
6 counts robbery
1 count attempt robbery
1 count attempt burglary
1 count assault with a deadly weapon
On September 26, 2019, detectives received a report from the Long Beach Police Department’s Forensic Science Services Division. The report leads detectives to believe one of the victims inside the 7-Eleven at the time of the robbery-in-progress was likely struck by a ricochet from an officer’s firearm. The ricochet resulted in minor injuries to the male adult victim’s upper torso. He was treated by the Long Beach Fire Department on scene.
Update: 9/20/19 at 8:00 p.m.
The Long Beach Police Department has identified the robbery suspect as 18-year-old Jordan Michael Griffin of Long Beach.
Griffin has prior criminal history and was being investigated as a suspect involved in the series of robberies outlined below.
After closer examination, it has been determined Griffin was holding a “C02 BB Pistol” simulating a firearm. Due to the suspect’s actions and failure to comply, detectives believed this to be a firearm. Fearing for the individuals inside the business, an officer involved shooting occurred.
As with all officer involved shooting incidents, the department will be conducting a full and thorough multi-level review, as well as the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, who is responsible for conducting an independent investigation of the shooting, as they do with all officer involved shootings that occur in Los Angeles County that result in injury or death.
Update: additional suspect's information was updated on 9/20/19 at 11:35 a.m.
On Thursday, September 19, 2019 at approximately 11:30 p.m., detectives observed a robbery in progress in the 5100 block of East Pacific Coast Highway, which led to an officer involved shooting that resulted in the death of a male adult.
At the time, detectives were performing surveillance on a dark colored Nissan Altima believed to be involved in a series of armed robberies that had occurred earlier in the week, when they observed a male adult suspect exit the vehicle and enter the business. Detectives proceeded to enter the business and directed the suspect to drop his firearm multiples times. The suspect failed to comply and an officer involved shooting occurred.
Detectives immediately began providing lifesaving measures until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived and determined the suspect deceased. The decedent will be identified by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
An additional adult male suspect, identified as 22-year-old Devontae Moore of Long Beach, who was in the vehicle parked on a street rear of the business was taken into custody, booked for robbery and is being held on $350,000 bail.
Officers did not sustain any injuries during the incident and no additional injuries were reported from the three individuals inside the business.
A firearm was located at the scene and will be examined by the Long Beach Police Department’s Forensic Science Services Division.
Homicide Detectives responded to the scene for the investigation.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office will be conducting a separate investigation of the incident as they do with all officer involved shootings.
