A few days ago as I was thinking about what to share or teach, a partial verse came into my mind, "Preach the word." (2 Timothy 4:2). There is more to that verse, but only the three words stood out.
The following day, another verse came to my mind, "Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them." (Hebrews 13:3). There is also more to that verse too, but it was only these few that stood out.
I was struck by the memory of all the times I was able to pray for those in all kinds of pain or loss. But there were some whose pain, loss and suffering I could not touch. It felt as if a bridge was broken down before me and I could not pass over.
I then thought of that verse in Luke 16:26, "And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence."
That is exactly how it feels. And I realized that our call to preach the gospel is highly contingent on our sufferings. Without which we cannot enter into their bond of sufferings as bound with them. Then is our preaching in vain. We are only then talking heads.
"A garden inclosed is my sister, my spouse; a spring shut up, a fountain sealed." Song of Solomon 4:12.
There is great power in prayer for those you can touch who are now in the same pain you were in. Only you can touch them unlike any other because you see their pain and loss, and remember. Then when you pray or preach the gospel, it will come flooding out of you like rivers of eternal life.
It says in Isaiah 42:3 it reads, "A bruised reed shall He not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth."
Amy Carmichael said, "The poorest shepherd boy on our South Indian hills in careful to choose, for the making of his flute, a reed that is straight and fine and quite unbruised. But our heavenly Shepherd often takes the broken and the bruised, and of such He makes His flutes."
