Pastel Painting Tutorial - How to Use Neutral Colors for Beautiful Paintings

Join me in this painting lesson where I create a scene of gestural violet flowers with a mostly neutral palette.

There are many advantages to painting with neutrals:
1. They are easy on the eyes giving the viewer a feeling of calm
2. They are humble... that might sound strange, but I think of them as colors that don't need to take center stage or be in the lime-light. They are quite content in being supporting characters in your paintings, allowing the more brilliant colors to steal the show and focal point energy.
3. They feel natural and organic - While we LOVE brilliant color in art, too much color can result in a painting that feels artificial or garish. Using neutrals will result in a painting that feels more true to life and natural.
