Paul had a special appreciation for, and relationship with the Philippian church. Their demonstration of Christian character and commitment to the gospel was second to none. “He who began” refers to God, and “the day of Christ Jesus” refers to the second coming. Paul’s confidence is that the good work, the Christian growth, or the sanctification process would be continuous for these believers because God finishes what He starts. We can have the same confidence that if we are committed to our Christian maturity, God will complete the work, He began in us because we know that when God started His work in us, He planned to follow through to completion.
