Music Monday | Music Theory For Kids | Preschool and Kindergarten Music Class | TEMPO 1
In Episode 8, we talk about tempo, a general term that refers to the speed at which a piece of music is played.
There are many specific terms in music used to describe the specific pace at which the piece of music should be played. In this episode, however, we focus on only two tempos (namely adagio and allegro) to simply the concept for children.
We employ the help of our friends Allegro Hare and Adagio Tortoise to teach this concept. We also use our ears in a listening exercise then encourage the children to sing and dance as we play a game that helps to consolidate their understanding of tempo.
Things you can do at home to familiarize your child with the concept of tempo:
1. Using a song that your child loves. Sing along together at a normal (andante) pace. Then choose either the term Adagio or Allegro and sing the song either slowly or fast and then vice versa.
2. You could play two contrasting pieces of music (one fast and one slow) and ask your child to identify whether it's Allegro or Adagio. We used Beethoven's Symphony No.7 in A major, Op.92 (played Allegro con brio meaning fast with spirit!)
For the contrasting adagio piece, we used Brahm's "Wiegenlied" ("Lullaby"; "Cradle Song"), Op. 49, No. 4
3. Interpreting music through movement and dance is another great way to help children understand musical concepts. You can play two contrasting pieces of music and ask your child to move to them. See how they interpret the slow tempo compared to the fast tempo and ask them why they moved the way they did.
Don't worry if your child doesn't execute this exercise perfectly. The point is to expose them to a variety of good music, familiarize them with the element of tempo in music, and to find joy in the musical process!
