Around 9:30, two MPD officers pulled over a man near 8100 East University for a civil traffic stop. Officers say the man seemed "evasive" and "didn't want to stop."

It was while officers spoke with the man, later identified as 54-year-old Paul R Newman, that he fired a weapon at them, and the police returned fire. Reports say the incident took roughly one minute, after which more officers arrived to take Newman into custody.

Mesa Fire and Medical Personnel treated Newman on the scene before transporting him to a local hospital. Officials say his injuries aren't believed to be life-threatening, and neither officer was injured.

Through investigation, it was learned that Newman had a $100,000 warrant for his arrest out of Coconino County for possession of dangerous drugs. He also had a large quantity of illegal drugs in his backpack.
