Performance Notes:

The inspiration for this piece came from a poem of the same name, written by Leconte de Lisle. Like the poetry, Debussy meant for the music to transport the listener to green pastures in Scotland and to a girl with golden hair. The music parallels poem in the naïve loveliness of the girl and the simple beauty of the scene.
Though a starting tempo is given, the piece should be played quite rubato. In fact, it is safe to suggest that, through the whole piece, only a few individual bars of music would be likely to be maintained at the same tempo through their entirety. While all the dynamics are quite reserved, precedence should be given to achieving beautiful sound, rather than playing at a soft-softer-softest dynamic range.
