Exploring McDowell Mountain Park//EP 13 Seeking the Winter Sun in our Converted ProMaster Van 136

We've joined our friends Dave and Candee at this sun-drenched southern playground for a bit of fun and exploring.

McDowell Mountain Park, northeast of Scottsdale, Arizona, is over 21,000 acres and has dozens of trails for mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding.

It's the place for warm-weather activities in the depth of winter. You can't just drop by and get a camping spot here. Our friends had to make their reservations six months in advance, and we jumped at the chance to join them when they invited us.

The trails are rated easy, moderate, or difficult. And there's plenty of trails for all skill levels. Whether you are a novice mountain biker like myself or a skilled rider like our friends, there is much fun to be had for everyone here.

Having the opportunity to explore the desert this time of year is a memorable experience. The daytime temperatures have been in the mid to low 70s - perfect for riding and hiking. The nights have been in the chilly '30s, but it makes sleeping in our van super comfy.

The desert this time of year is usually in bloom and even has green grass in areas. But, with the exceptionally dry weather, even the most hardy and drought-tolerant plants are distressed and dying.
Even so, it is wonderful to find such beautiful and exotic plants within a day's drive of our snowy home.
