U.S. President Joe Biden announced in Washington, D.C., on Monday that al-Qaida’s top leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in a CIA drone strike in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Saturday.

According to Biden, al-Zawahiri had been the leader of al-Qaida since Osama Bin Laden was killed by the U.S. 11 years earlier.

“No matter how long it takes, no matter where you hide. If you are a threat to our people, the United States will find you and take you out,” Biden said.

According to the president, Zawahiri was sheltering in a safehouse in Kabul and was killed in “a precise tailored airstrike” using two Hellfire missiles, in the biggest blow to the militant group since Bin Laden was killed in 2011.

The drone strike was conducted after being authorized by Biden following weeks of meetings with his cabinet and key advisers, the president said in his remarks. No American personnel were on the ground in Kabul at the time of the strike.
