Hidden chess secrets revealed!
Here we have a painting that was created in 1508 by the teenage artist Lucas van Leyden, called The Chess Players, depicting a game of courier chess, a medieval chess variant that was popular for 600 years.
It looks perhaps as if the lady is winning, and the gentleman is trying to act as if he doesn't care. Meanwhile, the audience all have their own differing opinions.
What us chess fans all want to know is whether this is a genuine game, and if so, what is really happening in the position on the board.
Let's take a closer look and see what we can find.
My major source for this video was http://www.courierchess.com/, where they also create reproductions of the courier chess set from the Lucas van Leyden painting.
