How To Avoid Eating Too Much Trans Fat
What is trans fat? How much should I eat? And why does it matter?
Trans fats are unsaturated fatty acids found naturally in foods such as meat, dairy, eggs, fish, nuts, seeds, avocados, olives, and olive oil. They also occur naturally in some plants, such as coconuts and palm kernels. In recent years, they've become a common ingredient in processed food because they add flavor and texture without adding calories or affecting nutritional value.
Trans fats are unhealthy because they raise LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and lower HDL (good) cholesterol levels. The American Heart Association recommends limiting consumption of these fats to less than 2 grams per day.
What Foods Contain Trans Fat?
Trans fats are found in processed foods such as cookies, crackers, cakes, pies, french fries, fried chicken, and other baked goods. They also appear naturally in meat and dairy products. The bad news is they raise cholesterol levels and increase the risk of heart disease.
Trans fat has been linked to increased risks of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, cancer, and premature death. In 2015, the FDA banned trans fats from being added to food sold in restaurants and grocery stores.
Eating too much trans fat can cause health problems. If you want to eat healthier, try avoiding these unhealthy ingredients.
Why Are Trans Fats Bad?
Trans fats are bad for your health. They raise cholesterol levels and increase the risk of heart disease. But they are also found in some foods that don’t seem unhealthy at all. What gives?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned trans fat from food since 2006. In 2010, the FDA added trans fats to its list of ingredients that should never appear on packaged food labels.
But trans fats aren’t always hidden in processed foods. Some natural foods contain them too. And even though these foods don’t look or taste very good, they might not be harmful after all.
How To Cook Easy Meals Safely
