There are a few reasons why planes fly at high altitudes such as 38,000 feet. Here are three: 1) The lack of air resistance makes a plane flying faster and consume less fuel, 2) To avoid climatic conditions such as turbulence and thunderstorms, 3) Flying high provides a safety cushion in the event of an emergency leaving pilots the time and space they need to recover from an incident.
