The Three Little Javelinas - By Susan Lowell - Illustrated by Jim Harris - Read Aloud Story
This variation on the story of the three little pigs is full of new words like saguaro cactus and adobe bricks as well as an introduction to the Navajo language and Mexican tradition. I love the American Southwest and have always been interested in the Native American and Latino cultural influences that make up the colorful culture of places like Arizona. Growing up in Western Washington no landscape could be farther from what I was once used to like seeing a forest of tall cacti instead of Douglas firs.
I hope this story helps entertain your children and hopefully builds their interest and confidence in reading some larger words sometimes. Reading can be a really intimidating and difficult prospect for a lot of kids. It can lead to embarrassment and frustration when unfamiliar words are difficult to sound out. I hope that my reading style can help children see that even grown-ups have to sound out the words and that it's okay to sound ridiculous sometimes when you read. Reading is a life skill that will open so many doors for those who learn, but even above and beyond that, I believe that stories educate and shape how we interact with the world more than we can know.
This story reinforces the importance of building strong bonds with our family members. It helps prepare children to understand that life is often a series of complications symbolized by the wolf at the door trying to blow our house down and eat us up. Children learn from stories like the 3 little pigs, and this adaptation, that there are consequences to choices and that making wise choices and preparing against danger is the route to success. These kinds of stories help children learn to be successful in the world.
I love reading and I love sharing these stories. I hope you enjoy this as well and if you do, please share this video with someone who might also enjoy it. Thank you for watching!
I make these videos so that you can expose your children to read aloud stories without having to be the one reading all the time, but please remember, that nothing substitutes the power of you, the parent, sharing stories with your children. Those shared moments will be sweet memories to your children throughout their lives. So enjoy my videos, but please please please do whatever it takes to make time to read stories to your kids. Please do that. And thank you for everything you do to raise these new little people.
